Jack Buell

As we’ve said before, some great people live in St. Maries.

One such resident is Jack Buell. A Benewah County Commissioner and local businessman, Jack was formally inducted into the Idaho Hall of Fame last week.  He was named to the hall earlier this year after being nominated for the honor by Freeman Duncan, a former Idaho legislator. Mr. Duncan made the induction presentation at the Timber Plus meeting Aug. 15.

Benewah County area residents are well aware of all Jack has done for our community, but it was a great honor for the state to recognize one of our own.

He owns Jack Buell Trucking with his wife, Eleanor, and is listed among the county’s largest employers.

Jack is one of the first to step forward when there is a need in the community, whether he’s sharing his resources or lending a hand in a community project. He’s been a strong voice in and for Benewah County for a long time.

Jack joins Vernon Baker, a Medal of Honor recipient, and Ernie Stensgar, former chairman of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, as the third local resident named to the Idaho Hall of Fame. The organization recognizes Idahoans who have made significant contributions to their community and state.

While not all of the great people of our community will be recognized at the state level like Jack, there are many who contribute to our community making St. Maries a great place to live.

The St. Maries Public Golf Course is as green and lush as ever, and ready for play. Set in the wooded hills just a mile east of St. Maries, the nine-hole course is as challenging as it is beautiful.

The clubhouse manager and staff have organized several tournaments throughout the summer. The next tournament is the Dave Hanley Memorial Tournament Aug. 25 and Aug. 26.

The two-person best ball tournament begins at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. Optional side games include Deuces, Honey Pot and Skins. A brand-new $30,000 car courtesy of Dave Smith Motors will sit at Hole 7 Saturday. If anyone should make a hole-in-one they’ll win the car.

Several area businesses have sponsored a hole for this worthy fundraiser in memory of David Hanley, who managed the golf course with his wife Connie for 15 years. He died April 8.

Call the golf course at 245-3842 for more information about this tournament or other events schedule during the final weeks of the summer.

St. Maries is a great place to live. Not only do we have an abundance of scenic wonder, and a multitude activities and events, we have some pretty fantastic people.

Many of those fantastic people will be recognized and remembered this weekend during the Benewah County Fair. The theme of this year’s fair is “Celebrating 100 years of 4-H and Fair.”

Scores of local residents from throughout Benewah County have volunteered their time and effort to create a fun, educational environment through the 4-H program year after year.  The annual Benewah County Fair, Aug. 16-19, gives these 4-H club members the opportunity to showcase their projects.

During Saturday’s Junior Show Market Animal Sale some other pretty fantastic people will step forward to help those participants by buying their market steer, swine, sheep and goats.

Past 4-H Club leaders and members will be honored during the 100th birthday celebration at the fairgrounds at 1 p.m. Sunday. The public is invited to the celebration which will include cake and ice cream.

Yes, St. Maries is rich in scenic beauty, that and pretty fantastic people too.

These grand champion chickens were among the livestock auctioned at the 2011 Fair.

The barns and buildings at the Benewah County fairgrounds will be brimming with exhibits as area residents show their best of everything; produce from their gardens, sewing, baked goods and livestock are just a few of the categories you’ll see.

For more than 60 years area youngsters have sold their grain-fed livestock projects, beef, swine and sheep, at the market auction. Plan to attend the auction this year and stock your freezer, helping out

Back this year is the Saturday’s Pie Judging Contest. Got a favorite pie recipe?

Enter your creation in the pie contest.

And you won’t want to miss the 4-H 100th Birthday Party. Cake and ice cream will be served as will a host of memories from area 4-H Club members, past and present.
