Christmas kicks off tomorrow

An old tradition returns and a new one begins. The annual Christmas in St. Maries celebration is Saturday, Dec. 2. The kickoff to the holiday season, sponsored by the St. Maries Chamber of Commerce, welcomes back an old tradition and adds a new activity as part of the day’s events. Years ago, individuals used to do a jingle bell stroll. This year, community members are invited to take part. Individuals will walk from IGA to Cabin City ringing jingle bells […]

SM Chamber Honors Locals

Two individuals, a business and an organization will be honored at the St. Maries Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Spring Fling Friday, May 1. This year’s Business of the Year is Hughes Ace Hardware. The organization of the year is the Paul Bunyan Days committee and two individuals, Dan Hammes and Ginny Oakes, tied for Citizen of the Year. “We always ask the business community to nominate who they feel are deserving and then we take the top four and send […]

Decorating Downtown

With various holidays coming up, members of the chamber have decided to make things more festive this year with more decorations. Shirley Ackerman and Sue Shoemaker decorated various corners and islands in the downtown St. Maries with festive fall items. Hay bales, scarecrows and cornstalks can be seen set up along Main Avenue. The two chamber officers are also working toward better decorations for the winter season. The chamber is collecting donations to help light up the downtown area for […]

Shoshone County: It’s a go on the Joe

The Shoshone County Commissioners voted unanimously to approve a special use permit for the second annual Race the Joe! Tuesday. The decision came after they listened to public testimony for and against the race Jan. 16 during a pubic hearing in Calder. The commissioners agreed that they would consider the impact the event, scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, will have on the area. There was concern whether the event would cause problems on an already congested weekend. Twenty-five people attended […]

Let it snow

Because we’re ready. Of course, if you’re familiar with us you know we’re always ready to celebrate each season. Winter is no different, and we are about to ring her in. Saturday marks the annual Christmas in St. Maries celebration. The day-long event celebrates small-town merriment with horse-drawn wagon rides, open fire pits along Main Avenue, a multitude of Christmas-themed contests and shopping. Christmas in St. Maries Schedule of Events  12:45 p.m. Santa’s arrival on Main Ave. 1 – 4 […]

Even Santa likes a good deal

I know, I know. I get that a lot of people don’t want to decorate, or sing carols or even talk about Christmas shopping before Thanksgiving has had its turn, but this is too exciting not to mention. You see, every year we put on a big event that turns St. Maries into an old-fashioned snow globe: We roast chestnuts on the sidewalks, block off Main Avenue and set up fire pits in the middle of the street, we visit […]

Winter is coming

Clearly I stole the title. It’s a blatant ripoff from one of my favorite series of books (now a very popular – and quite good – television show on HBO). In this context, however, the connotation is completely different from how it’s used in the books and on TV. Winter is not a bad word here in North Idaho, and we don’t use it as a warning. We revel in it. Here, we love winter. We play, we explore, we […]

I know it seems like we tell you to get here for some type of event nearly every weekend, but it’s for your own good. And this weekend is no different. Harrison’s Sixth Annual Oktoberfest is from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday in Harrison’s City Park – rain or shine. The event is sponsored by the Harrison Chamber of Commerce and benefits the Fourth of July Fireworks, the Summer Concert Series and other chamber products. Plus, it’s just plain fun. […]

Proof we live in a Wonderful Community

As you can see in this picture, it was another successful year with The Paperhouse Back to School in 60 Seconds donation drive. It’s businesses like The Paperhouse , and those that donated to the back-to-school drive, that help make St. Maries great. Thanks to area businesses, local charitable groups and individuals, the local office supply and book store was able to donate 55 kits to local schools. That meant 55 local children had new school supplies when classes began […]
