Annual Book Sale at Library Saturday

After a decade, the St. Maries Friends of the Library Book Sale continues to grow.

This year’s sale is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 8) at the library. Paperback books cost 25¢ and hard covered are $1.

The sale started with an idea and a handful of people. After a year of collection and two months of sorting, books disappeared by the bagful within just a few hours.

It has become so popular that since 2009 the library has offered a selection of donated books for sale year-round.

The group raised $600 from the sale their first year, but by the end of last year, the fundraiser had made $1,500.

Linda Foxworth is one of a handful of volunteers that help organize the book sale each year.

“It has been very successful and we continue to make more money each year,” volunteer Linda Foxworth said. “People really look forward to the sale and donate books back that they purchased in previous years.”

This year’s selection promises to be just as good if not better.

“It’s hard to say if we have more books than before, but we do have a lot to sell and a good selection,” Ms. Foxworth said.

During the sale, books are stacked in every available space in the library, including the basement.

The money is used to sponsor children’s programs like summer reading and harvest night and purchase books and supplies for the library.
