Spend Saturday night at the movies, American style

It’s been several years, decades even, since St. Maries area residents could spend a Saturday night at the movies without making the hour-long drive to Coeur d’Alene.

This Saturday night brings the drive-in movie classic, “American Graffiti,” to the city park in St. Maries.

That’s right, St. Maries will have its own drive-in movie night June 22. The movie is free and open to the public to drive in or walk in. Lawn chairs are recommended as it will be shown on the ball fields in City Park. Donations will be accepted.

The movie begins at dark and will be shown on a 40-foot screen. The 1973 coming of age film, directed and co-written by George Lucas, will conclude a day of family fun activities beginning with the Rattitude Rod Rumble rat rod show.

The rat rod show runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Aqua Park and features rat rods, vendors, a pin striper and a swap meet. At least 20 entries are expected in the show.

Vendor space is free and those who want to can bring parts and tools to trade or sell. Drifters Western Bar and Grill of Emida will have food available for lunch.

Rat Rod merchandise will be available. The hats include the embroidered words “Rattitude Rod Rumble,” while the jackets include an embroidered rat rod and those words.

A rat rod cruise will follow the show at 5 p.m. between 6th and 14th streets on Main Avenue.

About eight volunteers helped organize this year’s event. Committee chairman Darren Jackson, Jr. said the group does it to provide some different good family fun for the community.

Like most events in our community, this event is organized by a group of volunteers and is paid for sponsorship and donations. Any profit goes toward a good cause, of which there are many in our community. The event netted $150 last year and the money went to a scholarship for a local high school student.

Yep, this promises to be a great event, planned and organized by some great people. Both seem to be plentiful in St. Maries and the surrounding area.
