Students Land Another Grant

St. Maries Middle School students, who are a part of STAND (Support Teens Against Nicotine Dependency), have once again received a $1,000 grant.

The grant was awarded by the American Lung Association. Advisor Jennifer Watkins said only seven grants were awarded by the ALA.

Ms. Watkins said the students hope to use the money to purchase no smoking signs for the middle school and high school. Students also want to put up signs at bus stops.

These students, who are members of Idaho Drug Free Youth, are also a part of STAND or Support Teens Against Nicotine Dependency. Madison Cordell, an eighth grader, said the goal of STAND is to raise awareness of the threat tobacco poses. She said students do community activism projects to raise awareness as well as work to educate youth. As part of the program, students also encourage legislatures to advocate for higher taxes on tobacco products.

Through the grant, Alyssa Green and Liann Kren will attend a youth tobacco prevention workshop in Boise Nov. 6-8. This weekend, Aubree Osier and Jenna Bauer will also attend a leadership workshop in Cascade. All four said they are excited for the opportunity.

The girls said they believe their efforts are making a difference. In March, the girls hung no smoking signs near the playground in city park.

“I haven’t seen as many cigarette butts as before,” Alyssa said.

“I am so proud of these kids,” Ms. Watkins said. “They work so hard.”

Ms. Watkins said any student may participate in STAND. The members of STAND are also members of the school’s IDFY (Idaho Drug Free Youth) program.

IDFY will host a family movie night and dinner Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the St. Maries Middle School gym. The Grub Box will serve dinner at 4:45 p.m. and Maleficent will be shown at 6:15 p.m. Dinner costs $7. Donations will be accepted for the movie and will benefit the IDFY program.

During the evening, there will also be door prizes, 50/50 raffle, other raffles and concessions.

After a decade, the St. Maries Friends of the Library Book Sale continues to grow.

This year’s sale is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 8) at the library. Paperback books cost 25¢ and hard covered are $1.

The sale started with an idea and a handful of people. After a year of collection and two months of sorting, books disappeared by the bagful within just a few hours.

It has become so popular that since 2009 the library has offered a selection of donated books for sale year-round.

The group raised $600 from the sale their first year, but by the end of last year, the fundraiser had made $1,500.

Linda Foxworth is one of a handful of volunteers that help organize the book sale each year.

“It has been very successful and we continue to make more money each year,” volunteer Linda Foxworth said. “People really look forward to the sale and donate books back that they purchased in previous years.”

This year’s selection promises to be just as good if not better.

“It’s hard to say if we have more books than before, but we do have a lot to sell and a good selection,” Ms. Foxworth said.

During the sale, books are stacked in every available space in the library, including the basement.

The money is used to sponsor children’s programs like summer reading and harvest night and purchase books and supplies for the library.

Tickets are now available for the fifth annual St. Maries Lumberjack banquet, Nov. 7.

This year the 1982 Varsity Volleyball team will be the honored guests and inducted into the Lumberjack Hall of Fame.

Christmas help available

For most families, Christmas is a joyous time. For others, however, it can be a struggle.

There are several charitable efforts in our area that help to bridge the gap that some budgets leave. Applications are now being accepted by the Christmas Families Coalition, which provides gifts for children 18 years and younger who have an address in Worley, Plummer, Tensed or DeSmet.

The Coalition also provides food and other items to families who are in need during the holidays. This is the seventh year for the effort.

Christmas

Applications will be accepted through November 21. Applications can be picked up and returned to the following locations: Worley City Hall, the Food Distribution Warehouse, Plummer City Hall, The Big Store in Tensed and the post office in DeSmet.

Individuals, families, businesses, clubs, and churches can “adopt a family” and buy gifts for the children, donate money for the purchase of gifts or donate food or other needed items such as non-perishable food items not yet expired, new or unopened household necessities like toilet paper, cleaning supplies, shampoo, soap and more.

If your family, club, church, or business would like to participate in helping this year, call Emily Bell at (208) 686-0106.
